Book Review | Taylor Jenkins Reid - The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

3 The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

Ever wondered what it’s like to live in the limelight, surrounded by scandal, love, and secrets? Dive into The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid, where Hollywood’s glittering facade masks a story of raw emotion and some shocking truth(s) 👀

First Impressions

When I first picked up the book I wasn’t too impressed. I found myself stuck on the chapter about Evelyn's second husband (Don Adler) and thought it was just a basic romance about a Hollywood star. FYI, I'm actually read the book twice :') so it's not really my first impression hahah. But after re-reading it, I realized how wrong I was. The book is far more than it seems. The conflicts are incredibly well-crafted, and the ending truly took me by surprise.

What’s the Story?

The novel, written by Taylor Jenkins Reid, follows the life of Evelyn Hugo, a reclusive and iconic old Hollywood actress. Now in her late 70s, Evelyn decides to grant an exclusive interview to a relatively unknown journalist, Monique Grant. As Evelyn recounts her glamorous, she reveals the truth behind her seven marriages, each one tied to a significant moment in her career and personal life.

Through these stories, Evelyn uncovers her struggles with love, ambition, and identity, all while revealing the dark and sometimes scandalous secrets she’s kept hidden. The narrative delves into themes of love, sacrifice, and the cost of fame, ultimately revealing the real reason Evelyn chose Monique to tell her story and the deep connection they share.

But little does she known, what Evelyn has is turned out will cost her later, her life. Is it karma?

Plot Twists

Just when you think you’ve figured out Evelyn’s game, the story throws you a curveball. While her relationships might seem straightforward—becoming superstar and all the boring conflicts, it's not until later in the book that Evelyn's true feelings for someone she genuinely loves come into focus. Up until then, it might seem like she’s really putting efforts just to be together with this person; one of her ex-husband smart enough not to fall into her trap.

So the twist is about how she navigates her true love and manipulates those around her. When Evelyn told the story maybe like something you would do or just the usual, until she use it to you. Monique sees Evelyn’s true nature, how she finally thinks that Evelyn using her for X cause. I personally think Evelyn deserves her ending regardless of anything that happened to her. But Monique, with her heart, reacts differently than I might—haha.

Extra Tidbits

I have to admit, I’ve been fooled twice now—first by Titanic and now by Evelyn Hugo. I genuinely thought these stories were about real people! Turns out, Evelyn is just as fictional as Jack and Rose, which is a bit of a letdown.

When I read about Evelyn, I remember the combination of real Hollywood icons like Elizabeth Taylor who married quite often and Marilyn Monroe whom I describe Evelyn in my mind.

Final Thoughts

If you’re up for a book that combines the allure of old Hollywood with deep, emotional storytelling and not get easily bored, this book is worth to read. Evelyn’s journey is a powerful exploration of identity, sacrifice, and the search for genuine connection. It’s a captivating journey into a woman’s heart and mind.

So, what do you say? Ready to uncover Evelyn’s secrets? Grab the book and get lost in her world.
