Book Review | Freda McFadden’s The Inmate: Expect the Unexpected

2 The Inmates

[EPUB provided]

Hey there, fellow book enthusiasts! Today, I'm diving into The Inmate by Freda McFadden, a book that took me on a rollercoaster ride of twists and turns. If you're looking for a story that keeps you guessing until the very end, this one is for you.

First Impression

At first, I thought The Inmate would be about crazy people or some troublemakers in the prison. Well yeah~ it quite is, but not about exactly 'the people' in the prison itself. It’s about that specific person – someone with a deeply personal connection to our main character, Brooke.

Summary

Imagine this: your job is to be a nurse in a maximum-security prison. Sounds intense, right? The worst part isn't the patients a.k.a the inmates which will murder her on the spot, but Shane, Brooke's boyfriend.

Why is it? Is not just that Shane is her first boyfriend — he is also the biological father of her child, a fact he remains unaware of. It’s tragic to think that Brooke actually the one who put him behind the bars. Yet their first reunion ever after a decades is in the examination room with head stitches, quite awkward isn't it?

As Brooke navigates this unexpected and ironic reunion, she encounters a series of strange and unsettling events that keep reminding her about that night. Somehow as she remembers it, the more it's all connected. Because once she moved to Raker and met everyone from the past, the nightmare of that night haunting her; make her questioning the past decision that she made. She even doubts who is to trust in this situation. Is it her innocence boyfriend? Her best-friend? Voices inside her head? Or even the guard?

Trust Your Guts

Here's where The Inmate truly stands out: it's all about the details. Freda McFadden skillfully crafts a story where every small element matters. As you read, trust your instincts and look at the details. Missing the right clues or getting them wrong could lead you astray.

Why Brooke not remember that little details from that night? Why does him deserve to be in prison? The conflicting emotions of defending Shane while also questioning his innocence, create a compelling tension. There's a murder in the neighbourhood that seems to point directly to them, but something is missing. The truth is buried deep, and the clues are there for those who look closely.

Brooke’s internal struggle and doubt, mirror my own as a reader – I was so sure, and yet, so completely mistaken. Is her decision to put him in jail truly correct? Have you been fooled as well?

Final Thoughts

The Inmate isn't just a story; it's a mind-bending experience that will challenge your perception and keep you on the edge of your seat. I thought I had it all figured out – I really thought I did. Freda McFadden’s writing made me feel like a fool in the best possible way. Her ability to weave such a coherent yet unpredictable plot is truly remarkable.

So, dive in and pay close attention – you won't want to miss a thing. This book will make your mind whirl and keep you guessing right until the very end. You won't suspect the truth unless you’ve read thousands of thrillers before – and even then, you might be surprised.
